Peschiera del Garda is one of the main tourist centers on Lake Garda. On its outskirts there is the famous amusement park Gardaland, and the city itself boasts a perfectly preserved 16th-century fortress entered on the UNESCO list.
The city developed on the Via Gallica trade route back in Roman times. After a temporary fall, it was reborn in the Middle Ages, continuing the merchant traditions and being an important center of fish trade. In the 16th century, a fortress was built here, which today is one of the most important attractions of Peschiera del Garda.
The city center is situated on the islands and is surrounded by the fortifications of the former fortress. They were entered on the UNESCO list along with other defensive structures of the northern part of Italy. Among the fortifications is Fort San Marco, within which the Fort Peschier Museum and the Museum of Fisheries and Lakes Traditions are currently operating. An element of the former fortress are also old gates leading to the city, including the Verona Gate.
Located within the former fortress, the old town is a picturesque maze of cobbled streets and pretty, now restored tenement houses. You can also visit several historic churches, including the Sanctuary of Madonna del Frassino and the Church of San Martino.
As befits a city on the shores of a lake, Peschiera del Garda also has a marina and a promenade. In summer, there are bathing areas and beaches with good facilities as well as recreational and swimming equipment rentals. The amusement park Gardaland on the outskirts of the hotel provides entertainment.
