Montepulciano is a picturesque Tuscan town situated on a volcanic hill and surrounded by defensive walls. It is famous for its Renaissance architecture and the production of excellent red wines.

The heyday of Montepulciano took place under the authority of Florence, which began at the beginning of the 16th century. Before that, the city remained independent and developed thanks to its location on an important trade route. Medici in the 16th century surrounded it with defensive walls, creating the Montepulciano Fortress. A large part of them has been preserved to this day, with towers and gates, such as the Farine Gate and the San Donato Gate.

Inside the walls is a beautiful Renaissance city with the monumental Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, city palaces, the town hall and the Monastery of St. Bernard. Narrow streets lead to squares hidden between the houses. Here you can find many restaurants, cafes and handicraft shops.

Montepulciano's attractions are the vineyards that surround the city. Fine red wines such as Nobile di Montepulciano and Roso di Montepulciano have been produced here for centuries. There is no shortage of wine in the city, and around it you can also visit vineyards where wine tastings are organized.
