LICATA tourist attractions

Licata is a coastal town and summer destination on the southern coast of Sicily. In addition to the beaches, it also offers many interesting sights.

During Greek and Roman times, there was a settlement on top of Monte Sant'Angelo. Today you can see its remains, and next to it there is the 17th-century Sant'Angelo Castle. Monuments found during the excavations and in the sea around Licata can be seen in the former monastery of Sant'Angelo, which houses the Sea Museum, and in the Archaeological Museum.

The Middle Ages brought Licata frequent wars and raids as well as changes of superiors. It was ruled by the Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, and finally the Angevins. The city was devastated by frequent invasions by pirates. One of them is associated with the legend of the figure of Black Christ. The Turks wanted to destroy her by shooting lit arrows at her, but the fire did not cover her. Today the figure is presented in a gilded altar in the Black Christ Chapel of the Church of Santa Maria La Nova.

The coast around Licata has nice sandy, though quite narrow beaches. Many of them are located at the foot of the cliffs. The most famous are Marianello Beach and Rocca San Nicola Beach.
