Favara is a city with a history dating back to ancient times, which at the beginning of the 21st century was virtually unknown among tourists. This was changed by an extraordinary artistic project, which now attracts admirers of contemporary art.
The city is situated on a hill with wide views of the surrounding area. There is a lot of old, traditional buildings and a medieval castle that belonged to the Chiaramonte family. It is currently open to the public. Narrow streets, stone houses, and small yards did not attract tourists to the city, and an additional problem at the end of the 20th century was its rapid depopulation. The authorities tried various methods of detaining the inhabitants of Favara, but these were to no avail. People left mainly because of the lack of prospects.
Florinda Saieva and her husband Andrea Bartoli came up with the idea of how to revive a nice, quiet but decaying city. They were both related to art and decided to attract tourists to Favara through it. They created a small contemporary art gallery that grew into the Farm Cultural Park. The biggest attraction of Favara are currently seven historic courtyards in the city center, decorated with murals and contemporary sculptures. Numerous artistic and cultural activities are carried out here.
Thanks to Farm Cultural Park, Favara has reached the awareness of people interested in contemporary art. They started coming to Favara, and following the park, they also discovered its other charms, such as nice buildings or a beautiful area full of olive and almond groves. Today, Favara is included in most Sicily guides and advertises itself as a place that harmoniously combines tradition and modernity.
