Città di Castello is a historic Umbrian town situated at the foot of the Apennines. It is characterized by a well-preserved historic center, and its treasures include the local art museum, the Pinacotheque with a collection of works by Renaissance masters.
The city has Roman roots, but hardly any traces remain. Destroyed in the 6th century by the Ostrogothic invasions, it was not rebuilt until several centuries later. During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the city was under the influence of Florence, which resulted, among others, in with the local Renaissance architecture.
The greatest attraction of the Città di Castello is the Pinacotheque, which houses one of the best collections of Renaissance painting in Umbria. The building itself is also noteworthy because the famous Giorgio Vasari worked on it. This architect also designed the local Vitelli Palace.
In the center of Città di Castello, many historic buildings have been preserved, including the cathedral of S. Florido e Amanzio, which dates back to the 11th century, and the building of the present Cathedral Museum, where you can admire the rich collection of sacred art.
Outside the city center, on the hill, there is the Madonna di Belvedere Sanctuary. its origins date back to the 13th century, but the present church was built in the 18th century. It is a local place of worship and a destination for many pilgrims.
