Avezzano is a large city located at the foot of the Apennines. Due to the earthquake that destroyed it in 1915, there is no compact old town, but there are several noteworthy monuments here, including a medieval castle.
Until the early twentieth century, Avezzano had a well-preserved historic district that fell into ruins during a massive earthquake. It was not rebuilt, and the air raids during World War II brought further damage. It was survived by Orsini-Colonna Castle, a medieval fortress that now houses the Gallery of Contemporary Art. The main square of the city, Risorgiemento Square, was marked out after the earthquake and is a symbol of the city's rebirth. There is the Cathedral dei Marsi and public buildings next to it, and the center is decorated with a large fountain.
The attraction of Avezzano is its mountainous surroundings. It is a great place for active tourism, and the numerous routes leading through the Abruzzo National Park and the Vileno Sirente Park allow you to plan shorter and longer trips. A popular destination is the Monte Salviano Reserve with the Madonna di Pietraquaria sanctuary and pilgrimage routes.
