The villa was built on the orders of the emperor Hadrian, in the years 118–134. A characteristic feature of the building was a large area, compared to the area occupied by Pompeii. The villa consisted of three complexes, intended for the emperor, officials and soldiers. The remains of the villa were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999.
