AUGUSTA tourist attractions

Augusta is a port city whose historic center is located on a small island off the coast of Sicily. Within its limits there are several interesting churches and a medieval castle, rebuilt many times in later centuries.

The city was built on the ruins of a Greek colony and a Roman settlement. Here you can see the large archaeological site of Megara Hyblea, which is one of the most complete remains of a Greek city in Italy. During the Middle Ages, Augusta was reborn in the 12th century after invasions and repeated destruction by barbarians.

The city on the island has been destroyed several times in its history by earthquakes and tsunamis. Among the greatest historical attractions are the Castle Svevo built by Frederick II in the 13th century and numerous churches. The local Piazzaforte Museum, which shows the most important battles that took place near Augusta from antiquity to World War II, is very popular.

Augusta's attraction is also a nice coast, which, however, is not too much used for recreational purposes. A very picturesque place is Cape Santa Croce, where there is a lighthouse.
