Local name: Orecchio di Dionisio
Located inside:
Neapolis Archaeological Park
The limestone cave was carved out in the Temenites hill in the city of Syracuse. The name ("Ear of Dionysus") was given by the painter Michelangelo and comes from the similarity of formation to the human ear. The name is also associated with the acoustic effects inside the cave: it is said that the human voice echoes back up to 16 times.
