The still active stratovolcano is currently the highest and largest volcanic cone in Europe. Etna covers an area of at least 1250 km². The current height of the volcano is about 3340 m above sea level. Since 1987, some areas have been protected by the Etna Regional Park. In 2013, the volcano was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
