Alberobello is a town like from a fairy tale. All this is due to its unusual, UNESCO-listed buildings. There are round houses with conical stone roofs resembling large beehives.
The trulli houses of Alberobello are one of the main attractions not only of the city, but also of the whole of Puglia. They were built by the locals to avoid taxes. Fees had to be paid only for solid, brick structures, and trulli were considered temporary housing.
The largest concentration of trulli is in Alberobello itself. Today they are well-kept, painted white, and their roofs are decorated with symbolic paintings. Flower pots and vines planted by the facades add to their charm. Many houses are intended for rent or small souvenir shops, but some of them are still inhabited by their owners. Trulli can also be visited in several nearby towns, where there is less tourist traffic than in Alberobello.
