The old part of the town of Matera carved in the rocks of volcanic tuff. Until the mid-twentieth century it was the poorest district, but the last few decades brought a complete change in its face. Residents were resettled, and houses and churches carved into the rocks were renovated. Boarding houses, restaurants and cafes found their place here. In 1993, Sassi was included in the UNESCO list and is currently the biggest attraction of Matera.
