Steingaden is an Alpine village and municipality in Bavaria whose main attractions are historic churches, including the UNESCO-listed pilgrimage church in Wies.

Until the beginning of the 19th century, these areas belonged to the Steingaden monastery founded by Welf VI in 1147. Initially Romanesque building was thoroughly rebuilt in the Baroque style in the 18th century. Today, the monastery church of Steingaden ranks among the most beautiful baroque churches in Bavaria.

The biggest attraction in Steingaden and the place where thousands of tourists come every year is the pilgrimage church in Wies. It is a temple built in the mid-18th century by Dominicus and Jan Baptist Zimmermann, representing late baroque architecture and a magnificent, rococo interior design.

The surroundings of Steingaden are perfect for active tourism. There are many hiking and biking trails here. The dam Lake Lechstau Urspring is very popular, where you can practice water sports, and there are several beaches on the shores.
