Oberwesel is a historic town in the UNESCO-listed Middle Rhine Valley. It is picturesquely situated between wooded hills and the river bank, and has partially preserved medieval fortifications and many historic buildings.
The beginnings of the village date back to the 10th century, and in the Middle Ages it developed as a commercial, wine and fishing center. Due to its location, the town was surrounded by defensive walls, of which mainly the following defensive towers have survived to this day: the Ochsen Tower, the Zehner Tower, and the Haagsturm - Red Tower. One of the towers houses the Schonburg Tower Museum.
Inside the former city walls, the medieval layout has been preserved, although many buildings have a later origin here. You can see tenement houses from different eras, as well as the Church of Our Lady and a small market square.
A great attraction of Oberwesel are the boat trips on the Rhine, which allow you to admire the entire surroundings of the picturesque valley. There is also the interesting Decker Meteorite Museum.
