Lindau is a historic city on the shores of Lake Constance at the border with Austria. Its Old Town is located on a small island and has preserved almost complete buildings from the Middle Ages and Baroque.
The beginnings of the city date back to Roman times, and in the early Middle Ages it was on the route leading from Germany to Rome. It then became an important trade center, and in the 13th century it received the title of Free City of the Reich.
The Old Town is located on a small, tightly built-up island. It is connected to the mainland by a car bridge and a dam, which can be reached on foot. The oldest urban building is the church of St. Peter.
The island was fortified already in the Middle Ages. A large part of the city walls and towers have survived to this day, including the Mang Tower, Pulver Tower, Karl Bastion, and Tower of Thieves. The Mang Tower stands adjacent to the Port of Lindau in the southern part of the island and is the only one open to the public.
The entrance to the port is flanked by a 36-meter new lighthouse, on top of which there is an observation deck and a huge statue of a Bavarian Lion. From the port, you can sail on Lake Constance with BSB Die Bodensee or with BVB, which has been operating in these waters since 1824.
The most important and impressive monument of the Old Town of Lindau is the Old Town Hall from the first half of the fourteenth century. Its facade is covered with colorful frescoes and gilding. There is also a 12th-century church of St. Stephen and the Baroque Cathedral of the Mother of God standing on the site of a Romanesque temple from the 9th century
