Kehl is a city on the Rhine opposite the French city of Strasbourg. It is a modern resort and an important commercial and service center of the region. Its cross-border nature is emphasized by numerous transport links with Strasbourg and the bilingualism of most gastronomic and commercial facilities.
The origins of the city date back to the 11th century, but it has always developed in the shadow of Strasbourg, being its hinterland. Not many monuments have been preserved here, and today the city is a large commercial and service center for the inhabitants of the French bank of the Rhine. They come here for shopping and to do many errands due to lower prices.
The symbol of Kehl's cross-border nature is the Passerelle des Deux Rives footbridge, which looks like two bridges connected to each other. There is also the Hanau Museum, which is the highlight of Kehl, and a bustling pedestrian street with many restaurants, bars and cafes.
