Friedrichshafen is located on Lake Constance, surrounded by hilly landscapes from which the Alps are visible. It is associated with aviation because it was here that Zeppelin began his attempts to construct an airship and Dornier designed his first planes.
The city was founded at the beginning of the 19th century by joining the town of Buchhorn and the areas belonging to the Hofen monastery. The Baroque church with richly decorated vaults and a small, picturesque New Year's Chapel come from the time before the establishment of Friedrichshafen.
Lake Constance has been a summer holiday destination for many Germans for almost 200 years. There is a well-developed Fischbach Beach, and the Promenade runs along the banks. There are numerous cafes and restaurants next to it, and the shady gardens are perfect for relaxing on hot days.
However, the most important attractions of Friedrichshafen are related to aviation. The Zeppelin Museum is devoted to airships, especially the intercontinental model LZ 129 Hindenburg, whose catastrophe in 1937 in the USA ended the tourist use of these unusual aircraft.
The Dornier Museum is also associated with aviation. It can trace the development of aircraft production from wooden constructions to modern machines that were used during World War II. Friedrichshafen also houses one of the largest School Museums in Germany.
