Bernburg is a historic city whose main attraction is the Renaissance castle standing on the river bank. Today it houses museums, and the courtyard is the venue for various outdoor events.
The city was the seat of the Dukes of Anhalt, who built a Renaissance residence on the site of a Gothic stronghold. Today, picturesquely situated, it houses the Bernburg Castle Museum with exhibitions on mineralogy, cabaret activity in the GDR, and the history of the city. There is also a reconstruction of a torture chamber on its premises.
Bernburg Zoo is also one of the most important attractions. It is inhabited by over 1000 animals from all over the world, and the pride of the collection are exotic birds from Asia, Africa and South America.
Moving around Bernburg can also be made more fun. In the park, you can go for a ride on a narrow-gauge miniature park railway. Nice views of the city can be admired from the deck of the MS Saalefee.
