Aubagne is a city that has been gaining popularity among tourists in recent decades. Above all, it is an important cultural and craft center, and the old town, renovated at the beginning of the 21st century, is a great place for walks.
In the past, Aubagne did not play much of a role on the map of Provence. It was a local trade and craft center. It was famous for the production of traditional Santon figurines made of clay. Its decks are still located around Aubagne today. Currently, the production of figurines, one of the most famous Provencal souvenirs, is the main branch of local crafts. The center has numerous workshops and craft shops.
The city gained fame thanks to the French director, writer and film producer Marcel Pagnol. The Aubagne-based filmmaker portrayed them in his films. This attracted other artists, and with them came festivals and cultural events which are today the biggest attraction and recognizable element of Aubagne's tourist life.
