The sixteenth-century fortress on the island of If was established to protect the port of Marseille and for the purpose of a heavy prison. The castle owes its international fame to Alexander Dumas, who immortalized him in the novel "Count of Monte Christo". One of the most famous prisoners of the fortress was the famous Marquis de Sade.
