Hjørring is a city with over 1000 years of history. It is one of the oldest in Denmark and boasts several Romanesque churches and interesting museums.
The city was founded around 1000 and received privileges in 1243. Until the Thirty Years' War it was developing as a thriving trade and craft center. Three Romanesque churches, the church of St. Catherine, the Church of St. John and the Church of St. Olaf. The rebirth of the city after its fall did not take place until the mid-nineteenth century, when industry began to develop here. Today, Hjørring is primarily a center for food, furniture and metallurgical production.
From the mid-twentieth century, the authorities of Hjørring began to recognize its cultural and tourist potential. At that time, the action of erecting sculptures depicting the joy of everyday life in the city was initiated. To date, more than 160 have been built and are the highlight of Hjørring. The city also has the interesting Vendsyssel Historical Museum and the Vendsyssel Art Museum. At Peter Nørkjærs Square you can see many townhouses, mainly from the 19th century, and on the outskirts of the city there is a windmill, the Vennebjerg Mill.
