Aabenraa is a city situated on a deep fjord bay. In its center, a lot of historic buildings, mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries, have been preserved.

The city is located in Schleswig, which for centuries was the object of competition between Germany and Denmark. Eventually, the territory was annexed to Denmark after the 1920 plebiscite, but Aabenraa is still inhabited by a large German minority.

The oldest monument and one of Aabenraa's biggest attractions is the medieval Brundlund Castle, which now houses the Art Museum. In the surrounding park, you can also see the historic water castle mill. The church of St. Nicholas, on the tower of which there is an 18th century astronomical clock.

The most beautiful street in Aabenraa is Slotgade with 18th and 19th century low houses. Many of them are half-timbered, with sloping tiled roofs and colorful facades. Similar buildings can also be seen on the Strażników Square, around which there are restaurants and cafes.

The city's main museum is housed in the building of the former railway station. It has been adapted to the Arts and Culture Center, which organizes temporary exhibitions. In turn, the regional museum has in its collection models of ships, shipyard tools and objects brought by local seafarers.

Aabenraa has been associated with the sea since the Middle Ages. The port experienced its greatest boom in the 18th century, when, among others, ships from the Far East. To this day, it is one of the largest Danish ports. Åbenrå Beach is a place of recreation and relaxation near the port. Nature lovers, on the other hand, can venture out of town to the Søgård Mose bog.
