MEDJUGORJE tourist attractions

+1 attraction

Medjugorje is one of the most famous Marian shrines in Europe. The local apparitions, which began in 1981, turned a completely small town into a pilgrimage center with numerous hotels and a large church of St. Jacob.

Until the 1980s, Medjugorje was an ordinary mountain village, whose inhabitants dealt with agriculture and cattle breeding. In 1934, a concrete cross with a part of the Holy Cross was erected on the Kizevac hill towering over the city. It was a votive offering on the 1900 anniversary of the Redemption.

In 1981, the Holy Mother began to appear to six children from Medjugorje. The apparitions are to continue to this day, and the "seers" constantly communicate to the arriving pilgrims the recommendations which the Mother of God gives them. The church abstains from an official position on this miracle because, according to participants, the revelation is still going on.

Despite the lack of an official position of the church regarding Medjugorje, it is today one of the most dynamically developing centers of Marian worship in Europe. His heart is the modern church of St. James, in which rosary prayers for peace and a procession of light take place every evening.

Pilgrims also visit the hill where the first apparitions were to take place and cross the path of the cross leading to it. The pilgrimage trail also leads to the Krizevac Mountain, and some of the people who have apparitions meet regularly with pilgrims.
