The Dubrovnik suspension road bridge joined the banks of the Rijeka Dubrovačka bay in 2002. It has a length of 512 m, and its construction consists of a 66-meter viaduct (from the west) and a proper bridge, which is maintained by 38 steel ropes attached to a 324 m high A-shaped pylon. The name of the bridge named Franjo Tuđman - the late president of Croatia.
At the entrance to the bridge from the Dubrovnik side there is a plaque with the inscription "Bridge of Dubrovnik" - from the west side the name "Bridge of dr. Franja Tuđman. " This is the result of an internal political dispute and ambiguous assessments of Tuđman's presidency. A former soldier of Josip Broz Tito, later a dictator of Yugoslavia, he himself introduced the authoritarian system during his presidency (1990-1999). He was also accused of fueling ethnic conflicts and even inspiring war crimes.
Preparatory work (construction of access roads) for crossing the bridge through Rijeka began in 1989. They were interrupted during the war (1991-1995) and then started in 1998. The bridge put into service in 2002 cost over USD 30 million, and its opening was postponed five times due to technical shortcomings. The structure designed by Zlatko Šavor allowed to shorten the road from Dubrovnik to the other side of the bay by 9 km.
