Trsteno Arboretum

Local name: Arboretum Trsteno

The Trsteno Arboretum is the oldest botanical garden in Croatia and one of the oldest in Europe. The garden has an area of 255,000 square meters and here live about 400 species of plants. The Arboretum also has a vantage point, from where there is a view of the Adriatic Sea and the island of Lopud.

The most interesting botanical specimens include two huge plane trees, located in front of the entrance to the garden. Both are about 500 years old, they are 60 meters high, and their trunks are 13 meters in circumference.

The botanical garden was founded on the initiative of the Gučetić family at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. In the 20th century it was partially destroyed, but to this day, apart from vegetation, you can see here the original residence from 1502, the old mill, the 17th-century chapel of St. Jerome and the eighteenth-century fountain. These gardens were used as the scenery for the palace gardens at King's Landing in the series "Game of Thrones".
