Zermatt is an Alpine tourist destination located at the foot of the monumental Matterhorn mountain. It is a well-known ski resort with several dozen lifts, and in the summer a center for hiking and climbing.
Zermatt belongs to the most important holiday resorts in Switzerland, with a lot of hotels, guesthouses and apartments. The city is not allowed to move by combustion cars, which must be left in large parking lots in neighboring towns. Zermatt can be reached by a cog railway belonging to the highest in Europe or the famous Ice Express from Davos and St. Moritz.
The ski resort including Zermatt and the surrounding area offers 360 km of ski slopes of varying difficulty, as well as numerous cross-country, snowboard and free skiing routes. They are served by over fifty lifts and queues, including the funicular going to Kleine Matterhorn to a height of 3883 m above sea level, where there is an observation deck.
The area is also good for hiking and several hundred kilometers of hiking trails have been marked out, while the surrounding peaks also have climbing routes. The Gorner Gorge and the Alpine village of Findeln are very picturesque places for trips.
