Obergoms is a commune that encompasses the upper Rhone Valley and the vicinity of the Rhone Glacier, from which the river originates. It is an attractive area for cross-country skiing and mountain hiking in summer. It is surrounded by alpine three-thousanders and high, panoramic passes.
Established in 2009, the commune comprises the villages of Obergesteln, Oberwald and Ulrichen. Most of them have retained their traditional architecture with partially wooden houses and Gothic and Baroque white-walled churches. It is a good starting point for the nearby Aletsch Glacier, which is included in the UNESCO list together with the entire Jungfrau-Aletsch region.
Above the villages there is the Rhone Glacier, from which the river of the same name flows. It can be viewed from the Rhone Glacier viewpoint. You can also go on a trip to the glacier, but it requires crampons, and often also belaying. The glacier hosts Obergoms' major attraction, the Rhone Ice Grotto. You can also visit the Crystal Grotto in the area.
Above the Obergoms, there are two passes accessible by road, the Furka pass, which can be accessed by an antique cog railway, and the Grimselpass 2164 m, which can be reached by car. The passes can also be admired from viewpoints. Lake Totensee is also a very picturesque place for excursions. In winter, the entire valley is a famous center for cross-country skiing.
