The Royal Coin Cabinet
Local name: Kungliga Myntkabinettet
The Royal Monet Cabinet is the national museum of economics located in Stockholm in the historic Gamla Stan. It is one of the oldest museums in Sweden, the collection of which dates back to the 16th century. Inside, visitors have the opportunity to learn about the history of money from the 10th century up to the present day.
The museum's collection includes everything that has been used by people as a means of payment: shells, drachmas, payment cards and much more, including medals. They constitute the national heritage of Sweden and are the basis of all the museum's activities: exhibitions and research. The collection was started by King Jan III, who commissioned the collection of old coins to justify Sweden's right to three kroner in the national emblem, which were engraved on Swedish coins as early as the 14th century. Since then, the collection has been constantly growing, also with unique and valuable exhibits, such as the first Swedish coin minted at the end of the 10th century by King Olof Skötkonung.
