l'Escala is a holiday resort on the Costa Brava, which, in addition to its beautiful beaches, is also famous for the perfectly preserved ruins of the Greek city of Empuries.
The village is part of the picturesque bay of Las Rosas. There are beautiful sandy beaches here. The largest of these is the city's Riells Beach with excellent leisure and dining facilities. On the other hand, people looking for more peace can take advantage of the Del Riuet Beach or the tiny Pedrigolet surrounded by rocks. The Moll Grec beach has a spectacular setting as it is close to the city's most important attraction - the Ruins of Empuries.
Empuries was a city founded by the Greeks in the 6th century BC. After the fall of Greece, the Romans took it over. It was an important commercial and cultural center, and its remains are in very good condition. You can see here, among others ruins of houses decorated with mosaics, the central square, the agora, the remains of temples and the amphitheater. There is an archaeological museum next door. the area of the former town of Empuries has been entered on the UNESCO list.
