The fortress was built in the second half of VII century. It is the last medieval royal castle left in France. The stronghold received the title of a national monument. The current shape of the castle is the result of many conversions over the 12th-17th centuries. Within the fortress there is an educational path dedicated to the fishermen of Collioure and the history of the castle.
