Getaria is a charming seaside town and the birthplace of the famous fashion designer Cristobal Balenciaga. The combination of historic buildings, a small port and a nice, sandy beach makes them a perfect place for relaxation for those seeking peace.
The city is primarily associated with the figure of Cristobal Balenciaga, one of the leading houte couture designers. It is home to the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum, which houses mementoes of the designer, his sketches, and a collection of outfits designed by him.
The town is picturesquely situated at the foot of a rock protruding from the sea. Some of the buildings are located on the slopes, and the Old Town rises on the top of a seaside hill. There are many 15th and 16th century houses here, as well as the Gothic Church of San Salvador.
Below the Old Town is Getaria Harbor, which is used by local fishermen. There are many bars and restaurants in the area specializing in fish and seafood. A little further along the coast with villas and several guesthouses stretches the sandy Malkorbe Beach.
