The city is primarily associated with the figure of Cristobal Balenciaga, one of the leading houte couture designers. It is home to the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum, which houses mementoes of the designer, his sketches, and a collection of outfits designed by him.
The town is picturesquely situated at the foot of a rock protruding from the sea. Some of the buildings are located on the slopes, and the Old Town rises on the top of a seaside hill. There are many 15th and 16th century houses here, as well as the Gothic Church of San Salvador.
