The Bilbao Museum of Fine Arts offers a rich collection of paintings, drawings, graphics, artistic ceramics and sculptures from various historical periods from the 12th century to modern times.
The museum has over six thousand exhibits. The most important are the works of Pablo Picasso, El Greco, Jose de Ribera, El Salvador Dali, Luis Fernandez, Paul Gauguin, Pedro Orrente and Juan de Arrelano.
The museum is located in the Casilda Iturrizar park. The facility was founded in 1945 from the merger of the collections of the former Museo de Bellas Artes (operating since 1914) and Museo de Arte Moderno. The building in which the museum is located was built at the beginning of the 20th century according to the design of Fernando Urrutia y Gonzalo Cárdena. It underwent modernization in the years 1970-2001. It is worth noting that in addition to permanent exhibitions, the museum organizes temporary exhibitions presenting the work of selected artists.
