Getaria

Local name: Getariako

The history of this coastal town dates back to the Middle Ages. For centuries, fishing and whaling have been its driving force. This is where Juan Sebastian Elcano came from, the captain of the only ship of the Magellanic fleet to orbit the Earth. His Art Deco monument stands on the city walls.

Another famous resident of Getaria was the famous Spanish fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga, founder of the luxury fashion house Balenciaga. During the tour, you can visit a museum dedicated to him.

The town still has a fishing port, surrounded by taverns serving traditional dishes. Walking the streets you can see numerous preserved medieval houses and tenement houses as well as a gothic church from the 15th century. In 1397, a meeting of the General Council was held here, which declared Guipuzkoa an independent province.

There are slopes near the town, where you can see a unique geological phenomenon known as flysch. The area has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
