Slatina is the capital of the Olt region and the most important Romanian aluminum processing center. Most of the city is industrial in nature, but there are also buildings that testify to the long history of this place.
The first mentions of Slatin date back to the second half of the 14th century. They show that the town was then an important trade center and a stop for merchants on their way to southern Europe through the Olt gorge. The rapid development of the city began at the end of the 19th century, and after World War II, several industrial plants in the field of metallurgy and aluminum processing were located here.
Today, in the center of Slatina, you can see some interesting historic buildings. They include the Clocociov Monastery , the Ascension Cathedral and the Gheorghe Ionascu Cathedral . The Olt Region Museum, located in an Art Nouveau building, which is a big attraction itself, and the Regional Ethnographic Museum have a large collection .
Despite its industrial character, Slatina is a green city with numerous squares and parks. The largest of them is the Esplanade Park, which is a favorite place of leisure for residents.
