The Orthodox Church of St. George was built in 1656 on the initiative of the Wallachian hospodar Konstantin I Șerban and his wife Bălaşa. Brick was used for its construction, which was a reference to the traditional Wallachian churches from the 15th-16th centuries.
In 1848, a large part of the temple was destroyed by fire. The shingled roof, pulpit and church bells burned down then. During the reconstruction works, a 37-meter tower was built, and the church was covered with a tin roof.
