Oltenia Museum - Archeology and History Museum

Local name: Muzeul Olteniei - secția de Istorie și Arheologie

The Historical and Archaeological Museum is one of the departments of the multidisciplinary Museum of Oltenia. It is located in a historic building built in 1906 and initially serving as a school for girls. It is worth mentioning that the archaeological department was founded in 1915.

Permanent exhibitions trace the history of the region and the country from prehistoric times, beginning with the Paleolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Era. There are, among others a replica of the interior of the Peșter Muierilor cave, in which one of the oldest human remains in modern Romania was discovered, dating back to around 30,000 years.

The following exhibitions are devoted to various aspects of Romanian history. Here you can see reconstructions of houses and fortresses typical of the Dacian era and the space where the battle with the Ottoman army is depicted. There is also a collection of costumes and weapons from the 14th to the 19th century.
