Krajowa is the former capital of Oltenia and one of the most attractive tourist cities in southern Romania. It is famous for its wonderful parks and historic churches, the oldest of which date back to the 15th century.
In the past, Krajowa was the seat of the independent rulers of Oltenia, and with time it became part of the unifying Romanian state. Its oldest monument is the 15th century Monastery of Cosuna with an orthodox church, the interior of which is decorated with colorful polychromes. Among other Krajowy temples, the most famous are the Orthodox Church of St. Elijah, Church of the Madonna Dudu, Cathedral of St. Dumitru, Church of St. George, Orthodox Church of St. Trinity and the Church of St. Nicholas.
In the city center, the seventeenth-century House of Bans, that is the rulers of Oltenia, has been preserved, in which today the ethnographic section of the Oltenia Museum is located. There is also the Constantin Mihail Palace, erected at the turn of the 20th century, which today houses the highly regarded Museum of Art in Krajowa. It is also worth visiting the Historical and Archaeological Museum and the Natural History Museum.
The main attractions of Krajowy include the local parks and gardens. The most important of them is the vast "Nicolae Romanescu" Park. There is a zoo, a lake with a suspension bridge, a romantic enchanted castle, and plenty of walking paths and picnic areas. The Alexandru Buia Botanical Garden and the English Park and Mihai Bravu Garden are also good places for walks. On summer evenings, the Music Fountain shows on the main square of the city.
