The rock formation resembles the Egyptian Great Sphinx, hence its name. It lies at an altitude of 2216 m above sea level on a plateau in the Bucegi range. It measures 10 m high and 12 m wide. It consists mainly of sand rocks and conglomerates formed by wind and rain.
The Sphinx appeared in the Romanian-French historical film "Brave against Roman legions." He was presented as the place of the ritual death of Cotyso, son of the dacian king Decebalus. This scene was inspired by information provided by Herodotus, who wrote about the Holy Mountain, on which young warriors were sacrificed to the Thracian god of war Zalmoksis.
As a curiosity, it can be mentioned that in the Romanian mountains there are at least several megalithic formations known as the Sphinxes. Among them are, among others Sphinx Stanisoara, Sphinx Piatra Arsa or Sphinx Banat.
