The cave is situated on the right slope of the Ialomița gorges, at an altitude of 1,530 m. It is 480 m long, of which 400 m is open to the public, up to the Altar Hall. It owes its name to stalactites arranged in the shape of an altar. The cave can be visited all year round, but remember to wear warmer clothes.
The cave consists of several rooms connected by tunnels. The first is 115 m long, 15 m wide and from 10 to 25 m high. Until 1924, a river flowed along it, the current of which changed its course and runs on the ground. Behind the hall there is a gallery that is 20 meters long and 1 to 8 meters wide. Further on, you can see a few more rooms. One of them houses the skeleton of a cave bear.
At the entrance there is the Ialomița Monastery, built in the 16th century on the initiative of the Wallachian voivode Mihne I the Bad. Over the years, the building was damaged by fires several times, but it was rebuilt each time.
