The Cross of Heroes on Mount Caraiman

Local name: Crucea Eroilor de pe Muntele Caraiman

The Cross of Heroes on Mount Caraiman stands at an altitude of 2,291 meters above sea level. It is 28 meters high and its arms are 7 meters wide. It was made of steel profiles placed on a 7-meter pedestal made of concrete and stones. It is the highest cross standing on a mountain peak at this height and therefore was entered in the Guinness Book of Records in 2014.

There is a room inside the plinth. Initially, it housed a power generator that powers 120 bulbs illuminating the cross. In 1939, the cross was connected via an underground cable to the national power grid. Currently, there are 300 light bulbs with a power of 500 W. The illuminated cross can be seen from a distance of several dozen kilometers.

The Cross of Heroes was built in 1926-1928 in memory of 30,000 Romanian soldiers who died in the fighting in Prahova Valley during the First World War.
