Ponta do Sol is a tourist and holiday destination in Madeira, known as the sunniest spot on the island. It is also the warmest here, which makes this area perfect for spending holidays.
The city was founded in the first half of the 15th century, shortly after the colonization of Madeira by the Portuguese. For centuries, it was primarily an agricultural center that lived off the cultivation of sugar cane and a small commercial port. Currently, tourism plays an increasingly important role here. In the city, there is a historic Our Lady of Light and many nice old houses. At the top of the Chapel of St. Sebastian there is a viewpoint.
Ponta do Sol beach is covered with fine gravel and pebbles, and thanks to the breakwaters, the coastal waters are calm and perfect for bathing, even for children. The beach is developed, with sunbeds, umbrellas and swimming equipment rental. Along the shore there is the Esplanade Ponta do Sol promenade, the extension of which is the stone pier of Cais da Ponta do Sol, connecting the mainland with a small rocky island with a cafe.
The landscape attraction of Ponta do Sol is the waterfall that descends from the vertical-sided plateau above the town's main building, creating a spectacular view.
