Caniço is a holiday resort in Madeira. It has well-developed tourist facilities in the form of hotels and holiday apartments, and several beaches, including those with access to swimming pools. Its symbol is the figure of Christ the King standing on a high cliff.

The town is situated on several levels and basically moving around it is a continuous up and down journey. The oldest part with the church and nice, traditional buildings is located at the highest level. Hotels, boarding houses and tourist service facilities are located closer to the beaches and the coast.

The most recognizable feature in the Caniço landscape and the biggest attraction is the Statue of Christ the King. It is located at the end of a rocky headland that can be accessed via a path and several hundred stairs leading from the lower part of the city. There is also an easier way that can save you a long approach. You can enter the area of the monument by the Christo Rei Cablecar.

Madeira, although associated with seaside recreation, has few beaches convenient for tourists. Caniço Beach is covered with dark sand and gravel of volcanic origin. Along the coast you can also find many places on the rocks where there are platforms with sun loungers. You can also use the swimming pools, which is a safer option than swimming in the sea.
