The Sanctuary of Christ the King consists of a monument depicting the figure of Jesus and a church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The sanctuary also has dormitories, a dining room, meeting room and kitchen. Inside the 82-meter monument with a 218-meter sculpture of Christ the King, you can see the chapel of Our Lady of Peace, the chapel of the Heart of Jesus, the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, as well as two exhibition halls, a bar and a library. There are relics of Saint Faustina Kowalska, Saint Margaret Maria Alacoque and Saint John Eudes.
The establishment of the sanctuary in 1959 was inspired by the Brazilian sculpture of Christ the Redeemer. The huge monument was also to be a vote of thanksgiving for the end of World War II without major negative effects on the Portuguese state. It depicts the figure of Jesus Christ with outstretched arms, made by sculptor Francisco Franco de Sousa. At the base of the monument there is a viewing terrace from which you can see a panoramic view of Lisbon, the Tagus River and the Bridge on April 25.
