Monument of the Heroes of Warsaw 1939-1945 is the official name of the monument commonly known as the Warsaw Nike. The bronze statue of impressive dimensions (7 meters high and 6 meters long) represents the Greek goddess of victory and symbolically represents the struggling and victorious Warsaw.
The decision to build the monument was made in 1956, but only in the second competition the winning design was chosen. Out of more than a hundred proposals, Nike Warsaw was chosen by Marian Konieczny, a pupil of Xawery Dunikowski. According to the original concept, the monument was supposed to be located on a nearly 25-meter plinth, but was eventually reduced to just 6.5 meters.
The monument was unveiled in 1964. Originally located on Theater Square, however, due to its reconstruction and reconstruction of the Jabłoński Palace, in 1997 Nike was moved to Plac Nowy Nowy. She also stood on a higher 14 meter plinth, making the overall proportions look much better and closer to the concept of the Nike airborne author.
