The Grand Theatre in Warsaw is the biggest and most important opera theater in Poland. The huge building is not only a headquarters of the National Opera but also the Polish National Ballet, two out of three scenes of the National Theatre and the Theatre Museum collecting items which document the history of the Polish theatre. Galas on the occasion of national celebrations and concerts of famous classical musicians are organized here.
The gorgeous building of the Grand Theatre was built in classicist style in 1825-1833. Unfortunately, it was almost completely destroyed during World War II. It was rebuilt and significantly expanded in 1947-1965. The only preserved part which was left in its original form is the facade located on the Theatre Square's side. "The Haunted Manor" by Stanisław Moniuszko was staged during the celebration of theatre's opening on 20 November 1965.In 2009/2010 season, the Grand Theatre started cooperating with the world opera scenes: the Metropolitan Opera, Teatro alla Scala, English National Opera and the festivals in Bregenz and Baden-Baden, among others.Less
