The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a combination of a tomb and symbolic monument. It commemorates all unknown soldiers who died in a fight for freedom and sacrificed their lives for a country.
The monument is a small collonade, remains after the destroyed Saxon Palace. The eternal flame burns before the tomb and an honor guard is continuously held by soldiers.The urns filled with dirt from battlefields where Polish people fought during Wolrd War I are placed under the collonade. First ashes of an unknown soldier were brought from The Cemetery of the Defenders of Lviv in 1925. The tomb also keeps dirt from the Katyn's graves.Currently, the Tomb of the Uknown Soldier is a place where the most important national events are celebrated. The most important representatives of the state take part in them: the President of the Republic of Poland, the President of the Council of Ministers, Marshal of the Sejm and Marshal of the Senat.Less
