Powązki cemetery is one of the most famous antique necropolis in Poland. It played an important role in the history of Warsaw, mostly during the Second World War.
Powązki cemetery was recognized in 2014 as a historical monument. It was established in the end of the eighteenth century and since that time until nowadays it serves as necropolis. During the stormy period of Second World War it was a place of actions of the Home Army. There are also catacombs with Avenue of the Meritorious, where many famous Poles were buried.
Cemetery alone covers the area of 43 hectares. Around one million people are buried there, including distinguished scientists, writers, militaries, politicians, journalists, actors, clergymen and artists. Nearby, there is a church of St. Charles Borromeo, which was damaged during the war, but rebuilt afterwards.
