Faras Gallery

Local name: Galeria Faras

Located inside: National Museum

Opened under the honorary auspices of UNESCO and the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, the extraordinary Faras Gallery is a laureate of numerous awards: Sybilla Grand Prix 2014, Sybilla 2014 and the MUSE Awards awarded by the American Museum Association. It is only in Europe, and unique on the global scale exhibition of Nubian art from the Christian period. The exposition hall reflects the atmosphere of an authentic sacral interior, and the visit is accompanied by Coptic liturgical songs. Thanks to the digital reconstruction of the cathedral interior, the viewer can enter the inside of the Nubian temple. The exhibition is adjusted to the needs of people with hearing and visual impairments.

Priceless monuments became part of the museum collection thanks to Polish archaeologists who in the 1960s participated in the action under the auspices of UNESCO to save the remains of the ancient cultures of the Nile Valley. At that time the ruins of the cathedral church from the 8th century were discovered. The work was carried out in the former Faras urban centre and from this place the gallery was named. In addition to admiring the collections owned by the Museum, visitors can also see films and photographs made during excavations, as well as exhibits that were sent to the museum in Sudan.
