Orthodox church of St. Michael the Archangel

Local name: Cerkiew św. Michała Archanioła

Situated on a hill and surrounded by an old stand, the picturesque Orthodox church in Smolnik is the only sacral building in the Bieszczady Mountains, representing the archaic Boyko style of the simple. There are only three buildings in Poland. In 2013 it was listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The church is triple and has a framework. Nave, chancel and vestibule have the same height but vary in width. The original equipment has not survived to the present time, only a fragment of polychromy depicting the curtain sustained by angels and empty cartouches, originally contained by the Old Testament prophets.

The temple was built in 1672. Originally it was an orthodox church, then a Greek Catholic church and since 1974 it has a Roman Catholic church. This is the third temple built in Smolnik. The first mention comes from 1589, but both she and another were destroyed by fires.
