Tarnica is the highest peak of the western part of Polish Bieszczady. A characteristic feature is the large slope of the mountainside, with a fairly flat peak. It also has two tops with a slight difference in height. The main top is one on which stands a large, iron cross.
The height of the mountain is 1,346 m and belongs to the Crown of Polish Mountains. Up to approximately 1,000 m, the slopes are covered by a forest, the meadow is above this level. From the top tourists can see a panorama of the Western Bieszczady, Ukraine, Równa Połonina (Even Alpine Meadow), Sanocko-Turczańskie Mountains, as well as the distant Borżawa and Gorganów mountain chains. Tarnica has a specific silhouette. A deep pass separates it from the neighboring massif, while it is connected with Szeroki Wierch (Wide Peak) through a pass of a sharp indentation. That is where its name "tarnita" comes from - it means the pass. The way to the top leads through a short yellow side trail, a picturesque and steep blue path from the Wołosate village or the longest route marked in red.A rare perennial plant called the thyme broomrape can be found there.Less
